Some words of praise for the book!

THUMP (VICE): “Tullberg’s collection captures the spirit of the American ’90s rave scene in a way that transcends location. Perhaps it’s because his original style of using long-exposures to capture the kinetic energy of endless hours on darkened dance floors illuminated the scene before the introduction of the epic crane shot.”

LA WEEKLY: “Tullberg does a good job of capturing the scene — the superstar DJs, the club kids, the chilled-out crews, the pro-rave demonstrations — but more importantly, he pulls the viewer into the parties. Light refracts, piercing images like those moments when your eyes have been open for far too long. Scenes morph into vortices that blur at the edges, like your memories will the next day. In Tullberg’s photos, faces melt and hands multiply. They are photos that make you feel like you are in this moment that you hope will never end.”

MIXMAG.NET: “A photobook from electronic music photojournalist Michael Tullberg showcases images of the glory days of the American rave scene, before EDM was even a twinkle in Steve Aoki’s eye. ‘Dancefloor Thunderstorm: Land Of The Free, Home Of The Rave‘ charts the history of the underground dance movement during the 90s and 00s before it was dwarfed by the stadium EDM concerts that take place today.”

UPDATES! New book signing party, reduced domestic shipping!

Hey, all!

Sorry to keep you waiting, but we’ve had a bunch of new developments as of late, and we’ve just recently found the time to update you guys as to what’s been going on in the world of 5150. Well, the biggest news as of late is the latest book signing party we had for DANCEFLOOR THUNDERSTORM! We held it at the Conspiracy nightclub in Hollywood on April 25, and had a stellar lineup of five female DJs: Lexie Looker, Holly Adams, Eve Falcon, and the great headlining duo No Pants Party! Take a look at some highlights from this great signing event!

The other major development we want to mention is that we’ve been able to negotiate a reduction in shipping costs for DANCEFLOOR THUNDERSTORM! Now we can ship the book domestically for just $5.00, less than we’ve ever been able to ship the book out to customers before! That’s because we want you to be able to enjoy the glory days of the American rave scene as affordably as possible! This is why we recently brought the price of the book down as well–to make it easier for you to plug into this incredible era of American pop culture!

So don’t wait–tell your friends about this great opportunity to pick up America’s best coffee table photo book about the amazing period when rave music swept across America.

DFTS Price Reduction!

BIG NEWS! After more than two years since the release of DANCEFLOOR THUNDERSTORM, we’ve decided to lower the price of the book by 25%. This means that the base price for the book is now $44.99, while the autographed copies go for $49.99.

We feel that after two years, it was time to make DANCEFLOOR THUNDERSTORM more affordable to the fans of electronic music. As this is not an unusual practice in the book publishing world, we feel positive about being able to expand the book’s audience in this manner. We would like to point out that our publisher’s second book, THE RAVER STORIES PROJECT, has similarly had its retail price reduced on its Amazon sales page by Amazon.

We look forward to continue supplying the electronic music public with our books.

“DJs – THEN & NOW”, Week 10: SUPERSTAR DJ KEOKI!!!

Hello, everyone! Yes, we’ve made it to Week 10 of “DJs – THEN & NOW”, and what a legend we have for you today! It’s the originator of the term “Superstar DJ”, and in his case, the term is well-earned. From the beginnings of the late 80s New York club scene to his becoming a true electronic music superstar globally, this man has walked the line between artist and celebrity, and between genius and madman as well. He’s seen it all, he’s done it all, and somehow he survived it all, refusing to become just another stupid musical casualty. He’s the King of the Club Kids, the master of impending disaster–the one any only SUPERSTAR DJ KEOKI!

Superstar DJ Keoki

The shot on the left is poolside at Winter Music Conference in Miami (this is when people still actually went to Winter Music Conference). The shot on the right is from a tribute dinner to the now-legendary L.A. printing artist Richard Duardo. Overall, none the worse for wear, we’d say! Check out all the ink outlines on his younger self…just think of all that color that had to be filled in! This is a guy who’s put more miles behind him than most rock stars, and come out intact in the end. Kudos to you, Keoki–can’t wait to read your bio. Bet it’s gonna be a monster…wink, wink!

“DJs – THEN & NOW”, Week 8: MARK FARINA!!!

What’s up, people! Yes, it’s time once again for “DJs – Then & Now”, and this time around it’s our pleasure to acknowledge another old-school house master who definitely has made his mark on the electronic music world. In fact, it’s pretty to hard to find many American DJs who’ve made such an impression that fans marked their calendars after his performances so that they could look back and smile on a night that rocked their world. Yes, it’s the one and only MARK FARINA!!

Mark Farina FINAL

Wow, eighteen years and a beard are sure ways to mark a change, aren’t they? One thing that hasn’t changed–the amazing house beats that Mark has blessed the rave scene with for the past two decades! This man is definitely worth checking out, as you’ll see in this clip from one of his performances at Sound in Hollywood!

So what excuse do you now have for missing this guy’s show? Answer: NONE! And furthermore, the EDM generation definitely could use a good lesson about quality house music from time to time, so it’s fantastic that people like Mark have been providing that music all these years. So the next time Mark comes to your town, do yourself a favor…don’t miss him!!

DJs -THEN & NOW, Week 7: RICHIE HAWTIN!

Whoo-whee! A big apology to  everyone for last week’s lack of a “DJs: Then & Now” segment…we were quite honestly all wrapped up in the social media launch of our newest book project THE RAVER STORIES PROJECT. This is 5150’s next major book project, and so understandably some other things had to take a temporary back seat. But guess what–WE’RE BACK! And this time we’ve got someone really special for you on today’s Throwback Thursday! It’s the techno master himself, RICHIE HAWTIN!

RichieHawtin FINAL JPG

That 1999 shot of Richie was taken at the world-famous Viper Room on the Sunset Strip, when the great old club Atmosphere was in there. This was at the height of his Plastikman era. The one on the right is Richie not quite showing off his PLAYdifferently mixer at Sound in Hollywood. As you can see, putting the razor away can make a world of difference.

Richie appears a couple of times in the pages of DANCEFLOOR THUNDERSTORM, by the way…just thought we’d point that out…

And while we’ve got you here, we really do want to draw your attention to THE RAVER STORIES PROJECT. It’s going to be a fantastic collection of amazing raving nights, as written by the people who experienced them…the ravers themselves! In other words, this is going to be the first book about ravers, by ravers. If you haven’t noticed on social media already, we’ve just put out a Call For Submissions in the rave community, and the initial response has been nothing short of fantastic. Dozens of electronic music fans have already inquired about how to contribute their favorite rave memories to the project, and once our official press release goes out soon, we expect to see a lot more.

RSP Screenshot 1

We have a saying here at 5150: “Every raver has a story”, and this is the foundation of THE RAVER STORIES PROJECT, because it’s true! Every raver really does have a story, whether it’s about their first rave, or when they saw their favorite DJ spin, or when they found their significant raving other, or when Daft Punk conquered Coachella. It’s the amazing experiences that people go through that drives the rave scene in the first place, and we want to spotlight this long-neglected aspect of our wonderful community.

So yes, we really want to read what you have to say. Go to www.raverstoriesproject.com for full details!

And SEE YOU NEXT WEEK!!!
